“How HowStuffWorks….Works”

Podcasting (both audio and video) have become one of the fastest growing mediums for content creators. Brands and subject matter experts alike are entering the world of podcasting as a means of sharing content and expanding their audience.

HowStuffWorks got its start in 1998 at a college professor’s kitchen table – and quickly grew into an award-winning source of unbiased, reliable, easy-to-understand answers and explanations of how the world actually works. Today, they have a team of writers, editors, podcasters and video hosts that share all the things they are most excited to learn about with nearly 30 million visitors to the site each month.

Join Social Media Club Atlanta on Thursday, June 2nd at General Assembly for a very special evening with HowStuffWorks. We will discuss the origins of HowStuffWorks and its growth trajectory, as well as the process of developing content and how it is shared across multiple channels.

You will also have a chance to tour the HowStuffWorks Studios in the heart of Ponce City Market.

Schedule:

  • 6:00 – Registration Opens
  • 6:30, 6:50 and 7:10 – Guided HowStuffWorks Studio Tours and Networking
  • 7:30: Panel Discussion

Our Panel:

Jason Hoch

Jason Hoch is the Chief Content Officer for HowStuffWorks, responsible for the creation and growth of media across all text, video and audio experiences at HowStuffWorks.   Hoch has 20 years of experience driving innovative strategies in media, social and technology for both large media organizations and start-ups, including time as SVP, Digital for WWE, VP, Product and Mobile for Discovery Communications and a number of tech and content focused start-ups.

Hoch is active in the Atlanta community, serving on a number of Board positions including:

– Atlanta Science Festival – Board of Directors

– Vox Teen Communications – Board of Advisors

– Metro Atlanta Chamber – Board of Advisors.

Tracy V. Wilson

Tracy V. Wilson has loved stories and science for as long as she can remember. She joined HowStuffWorks as a staff writer in 2005, and she spent her first few years at the site destroying gadgets and mining patents, papers and interviews to figure out what makes things tick. In 2007, she took on the role of hiring and training HowStuffWorks’ new writers and editors. She became site director in 2010 and editorial director in 2014. Tracy cohosted the PopStuff pop culture podcast with Holly Frey; the pair now cohosts Stuff You Missed in History Class. Tracy’s love of history started to grow in college, with four required humanities courses that gave her a more holistic way to approach the past and how it affects the present. Tracy spends her downtime much like she spends her time at work: reading, writing, tinkering and brooking only the most delightful nonsense.

Allison Loudermilk

Allison Loudermilk is a senior editor at HowStuffWorks. She started at HowStuffWorks way back in 2008 and has been schooled in digital by editing, writing and even dabbling in podcasting for the site. As the former science editor, Allison edited many of the stories on things that blow up and otherwise keep researchers busy in labs and moldy, old basements. She’s currently having a lot of fun acting as the lead editor forHowStuffWorks Now, a brand-new site that you should check out if you haven’t already. She earned her B.A. in environmental science from Barnard College and has a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Georgia.

Nathan Otoski

Nathan Otoski is one of the newest members of the HowStuffWorks team and runs our social media and marketing efforts. He has over 15 years of marketing experience, working for both Fortune 500 companies and advertising agencies. Prior to HowStuffWorks, he led the digital marketing efforts for Cartoon Network and has over ten years experience in agency account management working with tech and entertainment companies including Sony PlayStation, Cox Communications and EarthLink. Nathan grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is slowly coming around to living in the South but will never be a fan of sweet tea.
